Weverton Cliffs

Knoxville, MD

We met on a very muggy July morning to hike another section of the Appalachian Trail, up to the overlook at Weverton Cliffs. This hike is only 1 mile from the commuter lot to the overlook but it is very rocky, has steps and lots of switchbacks to combat the elevation gain. Just shy of a mile, the AT takes a left hand turn and the Weverton Cliffs overlook trail goes 0.3miles to the right and through a large rocky outcrop of the Weverton Formation. As the trees thin among the rocks, the Potomac River, C&O Canal tow path and the B&O Railroad are visible below. After letting the gentle breeze dry our sweat, we began the descent and definitely relied on our trekking poles to help our knees as we navigated the rocky switchbacks.
